It probably originated in the Middle East and spread from there throughout Europe. In Hungary, it has been known since the 16th century, when it was first cultivated in the gardens of the nobility. It is an economically important vegetable and is grown in Spain, Italy and France, where it is grown in the largest quantities in Europe.

Cauliflower is typically grown from spring to late autumn, but its main season is in late summer and early autumn. In Hungary, cauliflower is also grown in significant quantities, mainly in the open field, but may also be grown in small quantities in greenhouses. The largest producer in Europe is Spain, but Italy and France also produce significant quantities.
Hungarian cauliflower is mainly available in shops between June and November. In the winter months, you will find imported cauliflowers on the shelves, mostly Italian or Spanish.

- The cauliflower roses should be firm, unblemished, white or cream-coloured and free of blemishes.
- Avoid specimens with a yellowing or brownish surface, as this indicates deterioration.
- The leaves should be bright green and fresh, with wilted leaves indicating an older crop.

Cauliflower is a very versatile vegetable. It can be steamed, boiled, baked, grilled or even eaten raw in salads or with dips.
