Lettuce is not only a tasty vegetable, it is also a very healthy vegetable and is particularly recommended in early spring. During this period, when our body is still recovering from the vitamin deficiencies accumulated during the winter months, lettuce is an excellent choice because of its vitamin content and easy digestibility. It is rich in vitamins A, C and K, as well as folate and fibre, which help to strengthen the immune system, improve blood formation and maintain a healthy digestive system. In addition, the lettuce will be on sale at SPAR stores between 7 and 13 March 2024.
There are many uses for lettuce in the kitchen. It is most often used as a base for fresh salads, but it can also be excellent in sandwiches, wrapped in tortillas or even in soups and smoothies. Creative uses include grilled salads, where lettuce halves are grilled and toasted, adding a special flavour to the dish. In addition, lettuce leaves can also be the perfect base for a variety of stuffed dishes, where they can be used as a substitute for traditional tortilla sheets or pasta.
Crowd favourite: egg noodles with pickled salad
A special and traditional pairing of egg noodles with pickled lettuce. This combination is not only tasty but also nutritious, making it the perfect choice for a light yet filling lunch or dinner. Egg noodles, or dumplings, are a modest but delicious dish that can be prepared in a variety of ways. In the old days, it was served with sour cream, fried bacon or sausages, or even as an accompaniment to stews and creamy casseroles. The freshness and slight acidity of the vinegar-based lettuce perfectly complements the soft, juicy flavour of the egg noodles, creating a balance in the dish. The recipe calls for flour, eggs, water, a little oil, salt and pepper. For the salad you need iceberg lettuce or lettuce, vinegar, sugar, salt and water. To prepare the noodles, mix the flour and salt, then add the egg and water to make a soft, easily crumbly dough. Sauté the dough in boiling salted water, and when floated, remove with a dough strainer. Wash the lettuce thoroughly, cut into pieces and dress with a vinegar, sugar and brine. This traditional recipe is not only delicious, but also healthy, as the freshness and vitamin content of the lettuce and the nutritious nature of the egg noodles make a perfect combination. Its distinctive flavour and simple preparation make it worth trying, and it is a favourite dish in traditional Hungarian cuisine.
